What Is Meant By Transport Or Transportation?
Here Is A Brief Definition Of Transportation.
Moving almost anything from one place to another, is considered transporting it. This can be the movement of goods, animals, people and anything else you can think of. There are any number of ways to accomplish the transport of these things and include but are not limited to modes of transportation such as roads, water, rail, air, cable, pipeline, and space. You might be able to think of others as well.
This huge field of endeavor can be divided into three general necessary ingredients. These include infrastructure, vehicles, and operations. Transport accomplishes the all important trade between people and that in turn maintains civilizations from one end of the globe to the other.
So what constitutes infrastructure? Well, this would be permanent istallations that make transport possible such as roads or highways, waterways including canals, airways including airport terminals, railways including rail stations, and a host of other infrastructure that includes bus stations, trucking terminals, fueling stations, warehouses, docks for shipping and loading, seaports, and all types of terminals for handling passengers and cargo as well as for maintenance.
Then there is the vehicle part of the equation. This infrastructure network is built and maintained to accomodate travel of all types of vehicles incuding automobiles, trucks, trains, buses, people, bicycles, motrocycles, helicopters, airplanes and other aricraft, boats, and other vehicles perhaps not yet invented. We sue these vehicles for transporting us to and from workplaces, transporting goods and animals from one place to another, for recreation, for business and almost all other human endeavors in one form or another.
The way these vehicles are operated constitutes Operations, the third part of the equation. Operations and the procedures set for this purpose include, legalities, financing, and policies. Operations and and the ownership of infrastructure can be either private or public. In most cases it is public. However, that really depends on the country and the mode or modes of transportation used.
Generally speaking, passenger transport is public except in instances where the governing body determines that it is more efficient and econimically advisable to allow private enterprises operate it. In either case, the agency involved must operate within the procedures outlined by a governmental entity. Freight transport is generally handled by private companies but it too must operate under the prevailing governing laws and policies.
Freight transport has become focused on containerization whether it be on ships, trains, trucks and other vehicles. Large volumes of durable goods are normally transprted in bulk in the larger of the containers whole smaller volumes of non durable and perishables are normally transported on medium and smaller containers.
It is easy to see how transport or transportation plays an important and necessary part when it comes to economic growth as well as globilization. The transport industry requires good planning in order to make traffic flow properly and make our lives better and keeping our freedoms intact.
While most people of the world realize that transporting goods, animals, and people presently use large amounts of land and contribute to air pollution to one degree or another, they also realize that until a viable alternative to the types of vehicles and their reliance on fossil fuels is found, we need to continue to develop our current resources to allow for continued growth in our economies.
By and large though, many viable alternatives are being considered and developed through experimentation to solve this situation. And, these alternatives, when they do become viable will also contributed to the growth of the worlds economies.
